Bungling thieves got away empty-handed following a botched burglary attempt at a hospital in Dartford that has closed the restaurant .

A 4x4 vehicle was rammed into the doors at Darent Valley Hospital, on Darenth Wood Road, on Saturday morning in what's believed was an attempt to get money out the cash machine.

Police were called just before 7am, while a police helicopter was seen searching for the thieves.

A spokesman for the hospital said the damage caused by the attempted burglary means that staff are unable to have hot dinners in the restaurant.

A spokesman said: "The doors to the hospital restaurant had been forced to an area housing a cash machine and it is believed a vehicle was used to access the area during unsuccessful attempts to remove the machine.

The attempts have resulted in significant damage to the doors and the surrounding structure.

"Owing to the extent of the damage the restaurant is now only able to serve food to take away.

Until such times as the seating area is repaired and declared safe, staff and visitors will be unable to enjoy a hot meal seated with their friends, relatives or colleagues.

" It could be some weeks before the restaurant is able to open fully once more."

Police are appealing for witnesses about what happened.

A spokesman for Kent Police said: "Doors had been forced to an area housing a cash machine and it is believed a vehicle was used to access the area during unsuccessful attempts to remove the machine.

“A police helicopter assisted a search of the surrounding area for the offenders, who remain outstanding.

“Forensic checks at the scene have also been carried out and enquires are ongoing.”
