A supermarket worker from Dartford who stole £31,000 in extra wages has been jailed for fraud.

Janette Norman, of Chaucer way, worked as a payroll clerk for a supermarket in Greenhithe and paid herself extra wages by reactivating a former employee's account.

Between November 2013 and November 2015 Norman paid herself the extra cash as missed breaks, extra hours or public holiday pay.

She racked up a total of £31,008 and her son, Christopher Norman, was paid an extra £5,937 for his work at the same store.

Investigating officer, Acting Detective Sergeant, James Mellett said: "Norman thought she could get away with paying herself extra wages as a way to repay debts she had accumulated and did not expect to get caught and was indeed confident that she could get away with her actions.

"Not only has her behaviour resulted in a jail term but her relationship with the son has been negatively affected as well.

"I hope her sentence helps her to realise the extent of her actions and that she can leave prison on a better path."

Norman's crimes came to light after an investigation by the company's head office.

The 51-year-old was sentenced to two years in prison at Maidstone Crown Court on Wednesday September 13 after pleading guilty to two counts of fraud.

Christopher Norman, 28, of Attlee Drive, was sentenced to nine months suspended for 18 months after a jury found him guilty of money laundering.

He was also ordered to pay £2,600 in costs.
