An injured horse was found pulling an empty metal cart through a village after reportedly being hit by a car.
Motorists said they saw the horse injured at the side of the road after the driver struck the animal and fled without stopping.
Police were called after the animal was spotted in Wilmington pulling a trap.
Officers went to the scene in Barn End Lane along with a vet, who gave medical treatment, before the horse was taken to a local stable.
The horse is said to have since made a full recovery since being found by the roadside at 6.09pm last Wednesday.
However, the animal's owner has not been traced and officers are asking anybody who recognises it to call them on 101 quoting reference 5-1095.
