A dad-to-be was nearly four times over the blood alcohol limit when he died in a crash in Darenth, an inquest heard.

Danny Downes, 32, died when his white Peugeot Partner van was involved in a collision in Darenth Hill, close to a roundabout with Green Street Green Road, just after 7.30pm on June 18.

An inquest held today at Gravesend Old Town Hall heard how the landscape gardener was not wearing a seatbelt and had an alcohol blood level of 307 milligrams – 80 is the limit.

Mr Downes was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash and a post-mortem examination carried out at Darent Valley Hospital confirmed the cause of death as severe chest and neck injuries.

Police Constable David Burley, of Kent Police, gave evidence saying the Dartford-born man could have survived if he had worn his seatbelt.

Darenth Hill has a speed limit of 40mph, decreasing to 30 when approaching the roundabout – and Mr Downes was driving faster than 60mph.

The inquest heard how there was damage to the front near side of his van and further damage to the roof.

Mr Downes was ejected from his vehicle after colliding with a lamppost, PC Burley said.

PC Burley added the responsibility of the accident lies with Mr Downes, with no highway factors contributing to his death.

Senior coroner Roger Hatch gave a verdict of a road traffic collision and expressed his sympathy to the family.

Shortly after his death, Mr Downes’ family said in a statement: “Danny was a much loved son, brother, grandson, fiancé, stepdad and friend and was looking forward to being a dad to his little baby boy.

“It brings comfort to us all knowing that Danny’s memory will live on through him. He was dedicated to his work as a landscaper, as well as being a bit of a Jack the Lad.

“He had a love for motorbikes and was at his happiest while riding his bike. He wore his heart on his sleeve.

“We would like to thank you for your kindness and generosity and ask to respect our privacy at this sad time.”
