Kent Police are warning residents to be aware following reports of a scam involving music vouchers in the Dartford area.

Several concerned elderly residents contacted officers on Tuesday and Wednesday after receiving phone calls from people claiming to be from Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs.

The caller tells each potential victim that they owe large sums of money in backdated tax, and that police are coming round shortly to take items to the value owed.

They are then informed that the only way to stop this is to buy iTunes vouchers and call back with the codes.

In addition, they are told to go to the bank to withdraw the money and not to talk to family or friends.

Sergeant Martin Sharp of Kent Police said: “So far we believe only elderly residents in Dartford have been recently targeted, with whom some have unfortunately believed the call was genuine.

“I would urge residents to not give out any personal information over the phone.

“If residents receive any call they are suspicious of, hang up and call the company directly by using a different phone as sometimes the person on the other end can keep the phone line open.”
