A blaze which destroyed 20 square metres of heathland in Dartford yesterday (May 15) may have been started by a discarded cigarette, according to fire investigators.
Crews from Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) fought the flames on Dartford Heath for 20 minutes, after being called at 6.50pm.
They used beaters and flexi packs to extinguish the blaze.
A KFRS spokesman said: “The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental, possibly caused by a discarded cigarette.”
Sadly, fires on Dartford Heath are a regular occurrence – especially in the summer months.
Last August, KFRS announced they were working with Kent Police to investigate the source of dozens of grass and shrub land fires, in a bid to stamp out “mindless” arson.
