A Dartford mum has been left outraged after her 13-year-old son was left in isolation at Ebbsfleet Academy - due to not doing homework she claims he never received.

Ms Fiona Barke, 35, of Shenley Road, believes that the school’s continuous lack of support for Joseph Flynn, 13, is the main reason for the trouble.

The teenager’s problems started when he broke his collarbone in a PE lesson on November 23.

His mother requested a copy of the accident report - but according to Ms Barke - the report was filled in by the receptionist and not the acting member of staff.

It is claimed that when Joseph returned to school in a sling a few days later another pupil hit him in the arm, forcing him back home.

Ms Barke said: “They do not nurture children anymore - they expect them to be all the same.

“We do not want to get the school into trouble but the punishments are not working.”

Joseph Flynn, 13, missed out on nearly a month’s worth of homework, it is reported

No action was reportedly taken against the boy but Joseph missed out on nearly a month’s worth of homework, Ms Barke told News Shopper.

She believes that a minimum amount of support was given to Joseph during this recovery period and says in spite of her attempts to get the work he needed to catch up on his studies, little to no attention was given to him.

When he returned to the school she claims he was put in detention for missing work he reportedly never received.

Ms Barke said: “It’s like a personal vendetta against my family.”

The principal of the academy, Alison Colwell, said: “On November 23, Joseph Barke injured his collarbone during a PE lesson.

“Following the incident, the required reports were completed by a trained first aider at the academy.

“On Joseph's return to school, he was offered the opportunity to use a quiet space during lunch and at break times to avoid further injury.

“Joseph was also provided with additional support sessions after school to ensure that he was able to maintain his progress in school and avoid falling behind.

“In a separate incident, Joseph was required to spend a day in Principal's Isolation during lesson time, following his decision to walk out of a previous detention.

“The Ebbsfleet Academy is committed to providing the best possible education and support for our pupils and we will continue to work with the family to resolve this matter.”
