A Swanscombe teenager says she has been "scarred for life" after doctors told her a face mask had left her with third degree burns.

Chantelle Currell, 19, used a chocolate face mask before going out with her partner last Tuesday, thinking it would get rid of her blackheads and improve her skin.

However, the reality was very different and she claims that within three minutes of applying the Montagne Jeunesse mask, a trusted brand she has used for years, her skin began to burn.

Miss Currell says she washed it straight off but marks had already begun appearing on her skin – and her GP sent her to see a burns specialist at Darent Valley Hospital the next day.

The Stanhope Road resident told News Shopper: "I went into my bedroom looked at my face, and it was severely burnt.

"At the moment it's blistered over and the hospital told me I would be scarred for life by it.

"I have bought that face mask since I was young and it’s always been fine.

"Perhaps it's a dodgy batch or something.

News Shopper:

"My lips were swollen. My cheeks have been swollen, I am struggling to eat because of the blisters.

"I went to the doctor's and he said he can't believe my face.

"You can't treat it because it's a third degree burn. All you can do it put Vaseline on it.

"It's really painful - and if the blisters pop I have got to go back to A&E because it can cause infection."

The health care assistant said she is embarrassed by the markings, and scared that she will be marked for life.

Miss Currell added: "My mum couldn't believe the state of my face, just from the face mask.

"I was sat in A&E and people were laughing and staring.

"It's the whole way around my face. I am going to be scarred for life from those three minutes of having a face mask on.

"My confidence is going to drop. I am a 19-year-old girl. I was embarrassed to go to work from it."

Miss Currell returned to the Asda supermarket in Swanley, where she says she bought the mask around Christmas – and claims she was "humiliated" by a staff member, who offered her a £1 refund in compensation.

Miss Currell, whose parents live in Swanley and run the Furni-Tech upholstery company in London Road, added: "I have complained about the lady and the state of my face.

"I'm in Swanley all the time, I'm always using that store."

She has complained to Asda and Montagne Jeunesse.

A Montagne Jeunesse spokesman said: "We can confirm that a report has been received of an alleged reaction to this product.

News Shopper:

"We have taken this report very seriously and are presently in the process of conducting a full investigation.

"We can confirm that this product was safety assessed by our own laboratory and by an independent toxicologist prior to launch and during manufacture, all of whom certified the product to be microbiologically pure.

"We are unable to comment further whilst investigations are ongoing."

An Asda spokesman said: "We're currently investigating and will be in touch with Ms Currell as soon as possible."
