A DJ has slammed Swanley Council's decision to charge "exorbitant" fees for hiring a conference space to entertain pensioners.

David Whyte, from Orpington, hosts popular tea dances at Alexandra Suite on Wednesday afternoons - sometimes attracting groups of 35 to 40 people.

Swanley's popular ballroom venue, the Alexandra Suite

The 55-year-old told News Shopper he may be forced to cancel the £6 classes, after the cost to hire the hall for three hours increased from £92.80 to £210.

Mr Whyte said: "I am running a business, not a charity.

"On average you make about £100 profit, which is not a huge amount.

"I could not increase the price to £10 because people would not pay that - it's way over the price.

"They also want about £250 damage deposit, which is a bit of an insult given the age group.

"It's taking something else away from the people."

Mr Whyte was shocked when the council gave him only two week's notice for the price hike, which comes into play next Tuesday (Sept 1).

News Shopper:

He has concerns about finding another space to accomodate the American ballroom dancing, which is traditionally followed by afternoon tea refreshments.

Mr Whyte, who tends to DJ dances one or twice a month, added: "The question is finding a venue that will accomodate you.

"This venue is all supplied and ready, and they provide the teas and coffees and refreshments.

"It would be hard to find another venue."

Coun Ray Morris, chairman of the banqueting board for Swanley Town Council, said: "Unfortunately, like all town and parish councils, we have a reduced income.

TODAY'S TOP STORIES:

"We can no longer afford to subsidise the many clubs and groups using the facilities to the extent that we do at present.

"Commercial users should pay the cost of opening and manning the Banqueting Suite rather than enjoy subsidised facilities at a cost to Swanley Council tax payers.

"Community not for profit groups are being offered alternative accommodation rather than an expensive Banqueting Suite."

The cost of hiring the venue is now £70-an-hour, but the council does not charge for setting up and clearing away time.
