A Ford Focus was spotted engulfed in a fireball of flames in the early hours of Saturday morning (August 22) in Swanley.

Kent Police is investigating the fire in Edgar Close after being contacted by the county's fire and rescue service.

The car, which had its number plates burnt off, is suspected as stolen because the police did not have any vehicle details available at the time, according to a spokeswoman for the force.

Joe Stevens, who lives around the corner in Swanley Lane, said it was a "bizarre" start to his Saturday morning when he spotted the bright orange flames at around 6.15am.

He told News Shopper: "I looked out my bedroom window, half way up the road there was a car on fire."

The 21-year-old said his neighbours were standing outside watching the burning wreckage until the fire bridgade arrived.

He said: "When I first saw it out of the window the flames were a lot smaller.

"I heard pops and bangs and the flames just got bigger really."

Mr Stevens said the road is generally quite a quiet cul-de-sac.

He added: "It's a bit bizarre for the area we're in. It's the nicer part of Swanley.

"Who dumps a car on a main close like this?

"Lucikly enough it didn't explode. It could have been really dangerous."

A spokesman for the police force said: "Officers were called to Edgar Close in Swanley at 6:16am and are carrying out enquiries."

The incident in Edgar Close was the second car fire in two days after another vehicle went up in flames in Sidcup on Friday.
