Work to improve roads around the Dartford Crossing has been 'successfully completed', Dart Charge bosses have announced.

The road works including the removal of the old payment booths and the installation of new safety systems to manage over-sized vehicles and dangerous loads were completed yesterday (July 27).

A temporary 30mph speed limit, which has been in place since work began in November, has been removed and replaced with a 50mph limit.

Dart Charge launched last November with the aim of speeding up journeys at the Dartford Crossing and giving drivers more flexibility about how and when they pay the crossing charge.

Dart Charge project director Nigel Gray said: "Dart Charge has already brought significant improvements to the 140,000 journeys that are made at the Dartford Crossing every day.

"Journeys are set to improve further still, with four lanes in each direction all operating with a 50mph speed limit.

"It is a significant milestone for the project and means that drivers will start to feel the full benefit of the changes that we have made with faster, less stressful journeys at this vital transport gateway."

However, motorists have hit back at Dart Charge bosses following months of chaos on the M25.

Over the past two days (July 27 -28) drivers have endured tailbacks up to eight-miles long following a multi-vehicle crash in the tunnel and faulty signs stopping the flow of traffic.

And, earlier this month News Shopper reported that road users had overpaid at least £250,000 in Dart Charge fines, according to figures released by Highways England.
