Royal baby fever has hit the nation with force following Kensington Palace’s announcement that the Duchess of Cambridge gave birth to a new princess this morning (May 2).

The eyes of the world are on the doors of the Lindo Wing of St Mary's Hospital in Paddington hoping to catch a glimpse of the little lady.

We have unearthed some interesting facts about baby of the moment:

1. The new princess is fourth in line to the throne following her granddad, HRH The Prince of Wales, dad, HRH The Duke of Cambridge and big brother, 21-month-old Prince George.

2. Following a change in succession laws in October 2011, the little one cannot be ‘leapfrogged’ by any younger brothers she might have to take the throne.

3. A girl has not been born this high up the line of succession for nearly 65 years, since Princess Anne was born in 1950 4.

4. She is the first member of the British monarch to take the title ‘Princess’ in 25 years – the last being Princess Eugenie in 1990.

6. British bookmakers face payouts of £500,000 as most punters guessed her gender correctly.

Nicola McGeady, from Coral, said: "Punters were spot on with their gamble on the royal baby being a girl, leaving British bookmakers with a payout in excess of £500,000."

7. The last time a great-granddaughter of a still-serving sovereign was born in direct succession on the male line was 118 years ago.

George VI's younger sister Princess Mary was born in 1897 when her great-grandmother Queen Victoria was on the throne.
