A Swanley resident fears his house will flood after relentless heavy rain last night.

Darren Cooling, of Pinks Hill, says the last two years have seen water flowing into his back garden every time there is a period of sustained or heavy rainfall

He added the problem has occurred since the Highways Agency resurfaced the stretch of the A20 which runs round the back of his house.

The 47-year-old said: "It has only started in the last couple of years since they started working on the highways and re-tarmacked the road.

"Now the water from the road all runs towards us. There is a field behind the house and it floods that.

"It's six foot deep at the moment and its started to go into back gardens. We put sand bags out this morning."

Mr Cooling and wife Emma live with their five children, the youngest of whom, Lily, is five.

He says he has frequently approached the Highways Agency and Kent County Council to deal with the problem, but it has not been resolved.

The last major issue came in January when firefighters were called to pump out eight Pinks Hill properties, which had become submerged in flooding, while properties also flooded over Christmas.

Mr Cooling said: "It is terrible - this comes after one of the driest Septembers we've ever had.

"We are really concerned if the weather does turn we will be in serious trouble.

"Last year we had no Christmas because of this - it was washed out. We're not asking for a white Christmas this year, all we want is to have a dry Christmas."

A Highways Agency spokesman said: "We have today sent a tanker to A20 Pinks Hill site, in support of Kent County Council, to deal with the flooding.

"Following flooding issues in early 2014, we have been working with Kent County Council to improve this issue including re-profiling the ditch and digging it out to be bigger and able to contain more water.

"In addition, Kent County Council are building a bund. Or earth embankment."
