SNOW is expected to continue to fall in the region for the next week, with no end of the big freeze in immediate sight.

The prediction of prolonged cold weather will bring a further chill to commuters and holidaymakers after two days of snow brought airports and transport networks to a shuddering halt.

Up to 6cm of snow is forecast to fall across the area today and up to 10cm could fall in local areas, and 15cm on higher ground, weather experts said.

The snow will become heavier as the day continues and east or northeasterly winds will make it feel bitter with the maximum temperature reaching 0C.

Tonight the snow is expected to clear leaving a cloudy and mostly dry night.

It will remain icy and cold with a widespread frost and the minimum temperature will be around -4C.

Tomorrow it will be cold and mostly cloudy with some sleet and snow at times.

The maximum temperature will be around 0C.

The Met Office has issued yellow warnings for ice for much of the country and advised people to take extra care as snow turns to ice in the sub-zero conditions.

Among rail services, Eurostar is warning all trains will be delayed today, with a number of services to and from Paris and Brussels cancelled.

Southern will run an amended timetable tomorrow because of forecast snow and Southeastern passengers are advised to check its live running page on its website before travelling.
