RESIDENTS in Swanscombe are fed-up at the "chaos" caused by wayward parental parking at a primary school.

Keary Road residents have complained about Manor Community Primary School parents ignoring double yellow and zig zag lines, parking on kerbs and snarling up the road.

They claim this happens every morning between 8am and 9am when parents drop off their children, and again in the afternoon when they pick them up between 3pm and 4pm.

Peter Langford, aged 48, suffers from multiple sclerosis and says his trips to the shops on Swanscombe highstreet can be a challenge in his mobility scooter.

He said: "It's absolute chaos, they have no consideration for anyone else.

"I don't think that many of them know the highway code.

"I want to go out when I want to go out, I shouldn't be dictated to by people who can't park."

David Bennett claims double yellow lines recently painted in the area have not stopped parents parking and chatting while partly blocking the road.

The 68-year-old said: "They still park any other way, they take no notice of them.

"Some of the children just run out across the road.

"To me the children's safety is paramount, end of discussion. The parents should have more control.

Jean Chapman, 73, added: "The mums just won't move. It's awful, it's like you don't want to be here."

Kent County Councillor for Swanscombe and Greenhithe Richard Lees had the double yellow lines painted on the corner of Munford Drive and Keary Road.

He said: "It's one of those things where people very quickly develop these bad habits and it's very difficult to shift them.

"I have got no problem with going back and having a chat with residents to see what more we can do."

Kent Police say they have no enforcement powers on double yellow lines unless there is an obstruction preventing traffic flow.

A statement said: "Kent Police will aim to respond to incidents of obstruction, such as incidents when people are prevented from going into or out of an entrance.

"We are also responsible for enforcing restrictions on parking on zig zag lines.

"Kent Police will continue to work with Manor Community Primary School on this enforcement."

No one at the school was available for comment.
