The victim, believed to be in his forties, was found by the London Ambulance Service at 3.30am on Saturday (Apr 28) lying at the side of the road.
He remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital.
The attack took place outside the Greenwich Glass and Joinery building, next to Deptford Bridge DLR station and witnesses have described seeing two men running away from the scene at that time.
Detective Sergeant Caroline Considine, in charge of the investigation, said: “We know from looking at CCTV that there were plenty people in the area when the attack took place.
