THE ‘sheer brutality’ of a teenager’s murder ranks it as one of the ‘very worst’ even seen by the investigating officer in his 25 years with the police.

News Shopper: Yemurai Kanyangarara bled to death after being stabbed in the neck

Yemurai Kanyangarara was with friends outside the Superdrug store in Upper Wickham Lane, Welling, at around 5pm yesterday when they were approached by three black youths.

One of these boys stabbed him once in the neck and, despite the best efforts of paramedics and shopkeepers to save him, he bled to death.

News Shopper: Friends have left tributes where Yemurai Kanyangarara was murdered

Friends have been laying tributes at the scene today (July 2) while police have been trying to piece together what happened.

Lead investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Mark Dunne says both Yemurai and his friends and the attackers had been on separate 96 buses which arrived in Welling around five minutes apart.

The St Columba’s School pupil had just stepped off the bus near the Superdrug and walked about 20 yards when he was attacked.

DCI Dunne said: “It’s the worst when you get a schoolboy being stabbed in broad daylight in a busy street in front of many shoppers and people out enjoying their afternoon.

“This is about as bad as it gets.

“It’s among the very worst that I have investigated because of the sheer brutality against an unarmed schoolboy.”

News Shopper: DCI Mark Dunne says Yemurai's murder is 'among the very worst' he's ever seen

DCI Dunne says he believes the 16-year-old boy was known to his attackers but he says he was not part of a gang and there is no obvious motive for the killing.

He also says there is no link between the attack and an incident in Blackheath last Tuesday where a Blackheath Bluecoat pupil was attacked outside the Marks and Spencer Simply Food shop.

And he says there is no evidence to suggest his attackers were Bluecoat pupils.

Yemurai had been living with his father Kelton in Leicester since January but returned to St Columba’s to take his GCSEs.

During this time he had been living with his mother Sharon Jambawo in Belvedere.

The three of them moved to the United Kingdom from Zimbabwe when Yemurai was two years old.

Any witnesses or anyone with information about the stabbing that may help the police is asked to call the incident room at Lewisham police station on 020 8721 4906.

To remain anonymous call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

A youth who was arrested in connection with the investigation has been released without charge.
