Police were pelted with objects during a one-hour stand-off with a man on a chicken shop roof last night (July 15)

Officers were called to Southend Lane, Bellingham, at 7.55pm following reports that a man had clambered on to the fast food store's roof.

A police spokesman said the man then hurled items at them during a one-hour stand-off which saw the road closed in both directions.

He said: "Officers spoke with the man, who is believed to be aged in his 40s, and he came down from the roof at 8.50pm. He was arrested on suspicion of affray and was taken to a south London police station where he remains in custody."

Twitter user @Leese72 dubbed it the "Bellingham chicken drama" and wrote: "Apparently there was drama last night: main road police-sealed for a man on the roof of the chicken shop. Even our criminals are chavvy."
