A £10,000 bespoke bicycle belonging to Great Britain triathlete Lewis Calcutt has been stolen in a car park smash-and-grab.

The loss has hamstrung the sportsman's chances of going to the European Championships in Geneva next month, as his Cervelo P5 Time Trial Racing Cycle was one of a kind.

The advanced specifications of the machine are crucial to Calcutt's performance and training when it comes to competitions.

Mr Calcutt left the bike in his car parked at St Johns station in Lewisham while he went to Wembley to watch the FA Cup final on May 30. But when he got back to his car later he found the side and rear windows smashed and the car was gone.

He said: "Everyone on the UK racing scene has been alerted and any serious racer needing a bike of this level would be stupid to touch it because in time it could be traced."

Mr Calcutt's dad Ray, 74, said his son was still training but "gutted".

News Shopper:

He said: "He's had to borrow an inferior bike.

"Because it's made-to-measure it's not that easy to get a replacement.

"His was loaded with lots of high-grade racing computers. It's very sophisticated technology for a very demanding race".

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: "We are investigating after a bike was stolen from a car at St John's station in south London on Saturday, May 30.

"The high-value racing bike was stolen from the vehicle, which was broken into in the station car park between the hours of 4pm and 8pm.

"Enquiries into the theft are ongoing".
