Trains through Charlton have been delayed after around 15 police were called to a trespasser on the line - then struggled to remove him.

Southeastern trains were being delayed through the station this afternoon because of the intruder.

Passenger Andrew Becoedsway said he had just arrived at Charlton station when a police car pulled up, followed by around three more.

The 23-year-old boarded a waiting train and was then stuck on it for more than 15 minutes as its driver updated passengers on the police operation.

He said: "There was an announcement that the police were struggling to arrest him and they had to forcibly remove him from the tracks."

A spokesman for British Transport Police: “We were called to Charlton station at 2.48pm to reports of a distressed man.

“Colleagues from Met Police also attended, and a man was detained under the Mental Health Act before being taken to a place of safety.”
