A former chaplain of a school in Eltham has been charged with sexual assault against boys aged 13 and 14.

Former Franciscan chaplain at St Thomas More comprehensive, Michael Pooley, 61, of Carlton Road in Erith has been charged with four counts of sexual assault against boys aged 13 and 14.

In a letter addressed to parents, executive principal Markus Ryan said: "As soon as these allegations came to the school's attention, Brother Michael was suspended from the school on December 4.

"The welfare of our students is always our main priority and the school have followed safeguarding procedures."

A Greenwich Council spokesman said the council was aware a former member of staff at a Greenwich secondary school had been charged with a serious criminal offence and was not able to comment in further detail due to the ongoing legal process.

He added: "The welfare of our children and young people is always our highest priority and we work with all our schools to ensure they provide a safe environment.

"The school has followed appropriate safeguarding procedures and has in place support for anyone affected by these events."

Pooley will appear at Bexley Magistrates' Court on May 8.
