A group of parliamentary candidates and councillors from Lewisham and Greenwich are demanding action from Network Rail and Southeastern after another day of delays.

April 13 saw severe delays and cancellations on south east London rail services due to engineering works at London Bridge.

There were also signal failures on lines between Deptford, New Cross and London Bridge.

A group of south east London Labour parliamentary candidates have written an open letter to Network Rail, Southeastern and Government transport rail minister Claire Perry about the disruption.

Lewisham East candidate Heidi Alexander said: "It is exasperating for everyone to be faced with yet more delays, cancellations and communication failures on our network.

"It would be impossible for me to overstate how shambolic commuters in south east London find the service they receive.

"Network Rail and Southeastern need to get a grip on this chaos and quickly - more excuses just won't cut it."

Greenwich Council have also requested a meeting with Network Rail about the chaos.

Greenwich Council cabinet member for regeneration and transport, Danny Thorpe, said: "Thousands of our residents and businesses depend on the rail network to go about their daily business and the ongoing delays and cancellations are causing misery to many. Enough is enough.

"Local people are rightly outraged at the current situation and I am determined to call Network Rail to account on their behalf."

South east route managing director for Network Rail, Alasdair Coates, said: "We are investigating what on initial inspection appears to be several unrelated faults on the lines between Deptford, New Cross and London Bridge.

"Many of those faults were repaired before 8am but by that point the damage was done and trains were severely delayed as a result.

"We recognise the importance of this station to London and we will do everything to find out what went wrong."
