A Lewisham man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering a woman whose body was found in the boot of a burned-out car.

Christopher Raymond Jeffery-Shaw, 26, of Lewisham, was held in custody in connection with the killing of the unnamed woman.

The body was found by firefighters shortly after 2pm last Friday (March 13) in the back of a badly burned Volkswagen Jetta which was dumped in a road near Horsham, West Sussex.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "A 26 year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder of a woman in the Ilfield murder inquiry.

"The man from London was detained on Tuesday. He is now in custody awaiting questioning."

Police were initially unable to determine the gender of the body but a post-mortem examination found it was a woman, possibly in her 20s, who died of who died from smoke inhalation.

She has not yet been identified.

Police are continuing to appeal for information about the woman's identity and are urgning people to call Sussex Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111
