Drunken Eltham thugs booted a man unconscious in the street during a "mass brawl" while a pub bouncer looked on and did nothing, police say.

The Rising Sun in the High Street is having its licence reviewed after the violent scenes last month - although a local Conservative councillor is calling for leniency towards the pub.

Three police units and an ambulance were called to the large fight in the street at 10.35pm on February 7 following an earlier altercation inside the pub between two groups.

According to a police report, violence broke out late on February 7, with one man being knocked out cold as paramedics helped another unconscious man in the road.

Superintendent David McLaren wrote in his report: "A patron of the premises was attacked, before being pulled from his moped and kicked on the ground.

"This sparked a mass brawl with approximately 10 to 20 people fighting in the doorway of the premises. As the fight escalates more people pour out of the pub to join in the fight."

He went on: "Of note is that none of the staff of the venue called police and the door staff can be seen to go back inside and nobody of any authority attempts to break the fight up."

Following the incident, one man required hospital treatment, including a CAT scan, while another was arrested - although no further action was taken.

The pub's licence to provide live entertainment has been temporarily suspended pending next week's council hearing, which could impose extra conditions on the boozer's licence.

But ward councillor Coun Spencer Drury said he had been reassured by local officers that the pub "was no worse than the others on the high street and that this was a one-off incident".

He said: "I don't think the police are asking for it to be closed down which is fantastic. They're asking for extra conditions which is okay as long as they're not too costly."

The councillor added: "I think it's important we try and maintain these community hubs where we can."

A spokesperson for the pub said: "The Rising Sun is a well-managed and popular pub. As a responsible retailer providing a safe and comfortable environment for our customers is of paramount importance and we work closely with local authorities to achieve this.

"We await the outcome of the hearing. Until then, it would be inappropriate for us to comment further."
