A Woolwich man has been found guilty of causing public outrage after he was spotted pleasuring himself on the top deck of a bus.

Robert Anthony Smith, 41, of Eglinton Road, was seen by a bus driver on her security camera on July 5 last year.

Ms Thorne was driving a number 53 bus past Orchard Road in Plumstead when she saw Smith on her security camera "bobbing up and down”.

After realising what he was doing, she stopped people from going to the top deck and raised an alert, which led to Smith's arrest.

TODAY'S TOP STORIES:

When questioned by Joanne Lang, defending, about the incident, Smith said: "I was sitting upstairs on the top deck and the seats were uncomfortable so I was adjusting my trousers, I did not expose myself."

Ms Lang claimed Smith had not committed an act of outraging public decency due to him being alone on the top deck at the time.

She also claimed Ms Thorne had jumped to conclusions when she saw Smith "bobbing up and down" as she could not see below his "pelvic area".

A panel of three magistrates found Smith guilty at Bromley Magistrates' Court this afternoon.

Smith will be sentenced on March 10.

He is barred from travelling on the top deck of buses until then.
