Landlords and pub managers in Greenwich are being encouraged to keep an eye out for excessive drinking over the Christmas period.

Greenwich Council, together with the police has launched a responsible drinking campaign to try and keep Greenwich as safe and trouble-free as possible.

Letters are being sent to all licensed premises in the borough, encouraging pub landlord and managers to keep an eye out for excessive drinking, turn down noisy music, and help their customers get home safely.

Councillor Jackie Smith, said: "We want people to enjoy themselves at Christmas, but we also want them to be safe.

"This campaign is a good opportunity for us to work with the police to encourage people to enjoy themselves, but in a way that is responsible."

A key element of this ensuring premises take all steps necessary to avoid under 18s being sold alcohol or having it bought for them, and ensuring that they also respect residents living nearby.

One of the letters was delivered in person on December 5 to the Earl of Chatham Pub on Thomas Street in Woolwich by Greenwich police borough commander Helen Millichap and Coun Smith.

The Earl of Chatham licensees, Keith and Lesley Tuckley said that they always encourage customers to be sensible throughout the year because many more people want to get together and celebrate with a drink.

Greenwich borough commander Helen Millichap, said: "Many licensed premises across the borough work hard throughout the party season to ensure safe and responsible festivities, causing no concerns to the police and our dedicated license officers.

"We expect all licensees in Greenwich to take responsibility for the impact their venues have on their local community.

"We'd like everyone to have a safe and enjoyable time without disturbances disruption."
