A Dartford former soldier has been jailed for 28 years after gunning down an innocent DVD salesman in Woolwich during a gang feud.

Daniel Burgess, 33, shot Marcus Innocent, 35, in the stomach after he was dragged into a car park by the gang from Kidbrooke.

Mr Innocent was in the "wrong place at the wrong time" when he met the 20-strong posse who were looking to avenge the vandalism of a friend's car.

He was set upon by the mob as he tried to walk away, blasted with a bullet in the lower abdomen from no more than six inches and left bleeding to death in the street as the gang fled in a four-car convoy.

Today, (July 25) Burgess was convicted of murder by an Old Bailey jury and sentenced to life with a minimum term of 28 years.

Judge Richard Marks told the killer: "If ever there was a man who was in the wrong place at the wrong time it was the unfortunate Marcus Innocent.

"He was punched and kicked and at some point you picked up that gun which had been unloaded from your vehicle.

"You have a knowledge of guns from your time in the army."

Judge Monks added: "As soon as you had shot him you fled, thinking only of yourself, and did everything you possibly could to avoid justice."

The confrontation, on November 19 2012 was sparked when the windscreen and side window of a car belonging to Burgess's pal Jack Brennan, 21, was damaged.

But instead of going to the police, he rounded up an armed posse to try and track down the perpetrators.

They drove around Woolwich for an hour looking for rival gang members before stumbling across Mr Innocent in Lord Warwick Street at around 6.20pm.

The posse was hunting for a man named Curtis 'Curly' Cowan and tried to use Mr Innocent to lure him into a trap.

Burgess, of Weardale Avenue, Dartford, was convicted of murder and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

Co-defendants Perry Sutton, 25, of Green Street Green Road, Dartford, and brothers Richard Brennan, 30, of Elmdene Road, Plumstead, plus Patrick Brennan, 24, and Jack Brennan, 22, both of Appleton Road, Kidbrooke, were all cleared of murder.
