RESIDENTS are “disturbed” and want to move after a woman in her 70s was stabbed to death in their usually “quiet” Catford neighbourhood yesterday afternoon.

A murder investigation has been launched following the stabbing at an address in Glenfarg Road which police were called to around 1.30pm.

The pensioner was taken to Lewisham Hospital but died later the same day. A 40-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Jey Sivathasan, who lives a few doors down from the scene in Glenfarg Road, says the incident has left her family “jumpy” and considering moving away.

The 50-year-old mental health worker told News Shopper: “This is really sad.

“This is our home. It makes you jumpy - double locks etc. You don’t want to be paranoid but you don’t want this happening.

“Everyone seems like they are very disturbed.

“We love this place.

“But my daughter wants to move.”

She added that it also makes her and her husband want to leave but they are committed to working in and serving the local community.

Former police officer Peter Thanni, who lives in nearby Fordel Road, says the knife attack is “unheard of” in the community-focused area.

The 54-year-old said: “It is such a quiet neighbourhood. I have never heard a drunk man in the 10 years I have lived here.

“This is unheard of.

“The thing is, we look after each other in the area – there is a sense of community, so it [the attack] isn’t nice.”

While sixth-form student Berivan Ozcelik says she has been left scared to walk down the street to her home on Glenfarg Road.

The 17-year-old said: “It is really sad.

“It makes you scared walking down your road. That someone’s capable of that.”

The 40-year-old man is currently in custody in a south London police station.

Detectives from the Homicide and Serious Crime Command are investigating and a post mortem will be arranged shortly. Formal identification of the deceased is yet to be made.
