A MAN tried to abduct a nine-year-old girl as she walked to school in Sydenham yesterday (February 5).

The girl was walking along Thorpewood Avenue at about 8.30am when she was approached by a man who tried to get her into a nearby vehicle.

She managed to get away and raise the alarm.

The suspect is described as being white, between 20 and 40 years of age and of medium build.

He was wearing a green padded coat, blue jeans and a black cap.

The vehicle is described as a large blue vehicle with a large scratch on the bonnet.

Detective Chief Inspector Greg Pople, from Lewisham Police, said: “We do not wish to cause alarm amongst parents but we would ask them and their children to remain vigilant.

"We would equally encourage anyone to alert police immediately by calling 999 if they are approached."

Anyone with information can also call Lewisham CID on 020 8284 8324 or, to remain anonymous, Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
