TEACHERS and friends of a star student killed in a road accident at the weekend have paid tribute to him.

Alex Ludlow, a student in the upper sixth form of Eltham College, Grove Park Road, Mottingham, was on his was home from a rugby match when he was killed in a collision with a passing car on Saturday (September 22)afternoon.

The 16-year-old grade-A student, who was put up a year because of his outstanding academic ability, got off the bus outside his home on Elmstead Lane, Elmstead Woods, when the accident happened.

Alex's father witnessed the collision and was on the scene quickly.

Police officers performed first aid on Alex, who was severely injured, but he died at the scene.

Headteacher of Eltham College, Paul Henderson said: "Alex was a delightful young man on the brink of a bright future.

"His manner was always calm and he appeared self-contained but was popular with his peers and respected by staff."

Alex, who was one of two children, loved all sports, particularly rugby and had just finished playing a game of rugby for the first team.

The all-rounder also took part in Duke of Edinburgh expeditions in the summer and had just started rehearsals for the school musical as a member of the chorus.

Mr Henderson added: "He will be most remembered as a confident young man with a smile on his face and a friendly hello on his lips.

"He was one of the academic scholars in his year and had planned to go to university at Warwick.

"When he first came from junior school he had been a quiet boy but had blossomed when he reached the sixth form.

"It is a tragic loss."

Friends of Alex have left flowers, cards, photographs and his Eltham College rugby shirt as a tribute to "an amazing friend".

A card signed by Ayo read: "To a real sportsman and a role model to all."

The mother of one of Alex's best friends at the memorial site said: "It is beyond belief.

"The boys and girls are so distraught. He was so loved."

An inquest into Alex's death was opened and adjourned today.

A driver has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The South East Traffic Collision Investigation Unit is investigating.

Anyone who has any information should call 020 8285 1574.

Alex and I were never close until a few years ago when we became the best of friends and I only wish I could have had more time to spend with one of the most amazing and special people I have ever had the pleasure to meet. He was an inspiration to so many and a great friend who could always be relied on. He will be sorely missed and will always be in my heart.

Until his clearly untimely death, I did not know that he was a friend of a friend of mine. No-one deserves to be killed so early in their life like this guy. He seems like a brilliant boy, with a great future ahead of him. His friends will sorely miss him

Alex was a terrific bloke. I new him for about five years, but it was only a few years ago when we played rugby next to each other in the scrum and from then on, I always respected you. You were one of the best people I new, and one of my lasting memories will probably be those ridiculously tight rugby shorts you used to always wear to training and matches!

You will be missed but not forgotten.

To news shopper, you are a little bit insensitive advertising a new Renault car within an article about a young man killed in a road accident.

I've known Luddy since Year 7, but only very well for the past 2 years. He was a great guy who would always put himself out for his friends. He was so strong, not just physically but mentally, and despite him calm and self-restrained exterior, he was a warm, gentle and loving person who was respected throughout the whole school. We will miss him forever, but he will always be in our memories.

Rest In Peace Luddy

There are no words to say how we felt when we heard the tragic news about Alex. So we send all our heartfelt sympathy and condolences to his family, for whom this is the most heartbreaking time.

Alex: We've watched you grow into a genuine and lovely son, brother and person, and we’re blessed and privileged to have known you. If the love of family and friends could change what's happened, you’d be here right now, but sadly, we have to let you go. We'll miss you so much, but will cherish the times we spent with you and your family and we’ll hold on to the memories forever. xxx
