Audiences at Greenwich Theatre will get a special showing this month (15 - 17 May) of an award-winning musical that’s coming out as an American film later this year.
The rights to The Last Five Years – starring Over The Rainbow winner Danielle Hope and West End star Jon Robyns – have been suspended ahead of the film’s release.
“It’s very exciting because this will be the last stage production,” said Greenwich Theatre’s executive and artistic director James Haddrell. “We are co-producing it with the As Told By theatre company, who are part of our artist development programme. Jon is an absolute stalwart West End star and Danielle went on to play Dorothy in the Andrew Lloyd Webber production of The Wizard of Oz.”
James describes The Last Five Years – an emotionally powerful modern love story - as the sort of musical that everyone who is a performer wants to be in. He added: “It’s unusual with a cast of two people, just Jon and Danielle, who tell the story of a New York couple’s relationship, one chronologically and the other backwards.
“They only meet in time once – at their wedding. It’s right up my street as far as musicals are concerned because it’s my challenge to people who say they don’t like musicals. Well, try this one!”
Tony Award winner Jason Robert Brown wrote the words and music, and director Katie Pesskin said: “It’s a brilliant and very popular show. It’s going to be a stripped back production and aesthetically more symbolic because of the unique format.”
Catch it while you can!
