A South London Hospice is only three months away from a record-breaking attempt.

Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice on Bostall Hill, Abbey Wood will take part in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for getting the most people to tandem skydive in 24 hours.

The Hospice is looking for brave local people to take part in the jump and raise funds for the charity.

The current record stands at 187 skydives and organiser Skyline Parachuting has already got 100 people signed up for the challenge, with the hope of recruiting even more to smash the record and raise thousands of pounds for charitable causes, with each skydiver fund-raising for their own chosen charity.

Jane Borrett, the challenge events fundraiser for Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice currently has five people signed up for the Hospice jump including the Hospice’s Head of Human Resources, Jane Lundy, and Day Care patient, Anne Seakins.

“I’m doing the jump because I really want to give something back to the Hospice as they have supported me and given me so much over the last 15 years,” said Anne, who lives in Welling. “I wanted to help by doing something totally different, something that will make people want to sponsor me.”

The 55-year-old suffers from Multiple Sclerosis and attends the Hospice’s Day Care centre every Tuesday.

“It’s good to talk to people who understand what it’s like to have a life limiting illness,” said Anne.

“We sit and chat and have lunch together. Occasionally there is entertainment. If we have any questions about benefits or any other type of help we need there is someone there to ask. We support each other.

“Multiple Sclerosis is a condition that I live with and with the support of the Hospice I live my life to the full.

“I don’t like heights or flying so the jump will definitely be a challenge,” said Anne, who hopes to raise over £500 for the Hospice.

The jump itself will be officially adjudicated so Anne and the rest of the fundraisers will be able to tell everyone they know that they are a certified World Record Breaker!

Staff member Jane Lundy from Sidcup has done two static line jumps in the past but this will be the first time she has fundraised for the Hospice. “I want to raise money for Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice because I believe passionately in the great work that we do,” said Jane.

Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice opened in 1994 and has spent the last 20 years providing free care for terminally ill patients and support for families across the London Boroughs of Greenwich and Bexley. It is the only provider of specialist palliative care in Greenwich and Bexley and for the past 20 years has championed quality and choice in end of life care.
