A team of six Age UK Bromley & Greenwich staff members took on the Snowdon Challenge and on Saturday 13th September, they conquered the highest peak in Wales to raise awareness and funds for older people living in Bromley and Greenwich who are isolated and lonely.

Social isolation amongst older people is a growing concern and particularly as the older population is rising. In the London Borough of Bromley, there are 27,200 people aged 75 years and over of which 13,600 live alone. By 2030, this figure is forecast to increase to 38,300 people age 75 years and over of which 18,800 will live alone, (POPPI). Whilst not all older people who live alone are isolated or lonely. However, in later life older people are more likely to experience multiple life changing events such as bereavement, retirement, social disadvantage, family breakdown or ill health, all known triggers of social isolation and loneliness.

Loneliness is a bigger problem than simply an emotional experience. *Research shows that loneliness and social isolation are harmful to our health: lacking social connections is a comparable risk factor for early death as smoking 15 cigarettes a day, and is worse for us than well-known risk factors such as obesity and physical inactivity.

The funds raised will go towards our befriending and companionship service, alleviating social isolation and loneliness over the winter months.

It is not too late to add to the £5,000 already raised. To send a donation either visit our website www.ageukbromleyandgreenwich.org.uk or send a cheque to: Age UK Bromley & Greenwich, Community House, South Street, Bromley BR1 1RH Based on information supplied by Maureen Falloon.
