In their November meeting Fairfield (Dartford) Women’s Institute celebrated its birthday with a party.

Members brought a selection of delicious savory food, followed by diet defying gateaux, creamy cakes and fresh strawberries and grapes.

After we had eaten we were challenged by Chris Baker from Dartford Borough Museum to identify intriguing items he had brought along with him.

This proved more difficult that it seemed, was the article a button fastener, was this object roman or could this be a modern item?

The answers when they came proved that some things are definitely not what they seem.

The roman item turned out to be a fraud made in the 19th century by two men who dug in the Thames mud for relics and found making their own relics more profitable.

The result of this quiz showed that as industries and fashions changed the small objects that we used also got out of use.

What will our dependants decide when they view the small objects such as potatoe peelers or other items that we use nowadays?

This month the Denman College Bursary was drawn. All members could enter the draw and the winner was Judith Cheeseman.

She will be able to attend one of their residential courses in craft, home economics, art and general studies at the WI college in Oxfordshire.

The District Carol Service this year will be at St Barnabas Church, Bexley on December 16th.

The usual groups will meet this month, craft and chat, play reading scrabble and both reading groups.

Fairfield (Dartford) WI meets on the second Tuesday of the month at the Dartford Grammar School for Girls, Shepherds Lane at 7.30pm. Contact Mrs Gillian Seager 01322 276168
