The August meeting of the above Guild was a purely social event in the form of a garden party at the home of the Chairman, with a raffle and a bring and buy table.

At the Guild meeting on September 22nd, the speaker’s subject was “Fans” and of the 150 items she had collected Mrs Angela Verralls brought a small selection to illustrate her talk.

Fans have been fashion accessories for hundreds of years, the first being fixed fans made of straw and cockerel and peacock feathers.

In the 17th Century folding ones made of ivory, horn and lace were in fashion with widows usually having black ones which were popular with Queen Victoria. Advertising fans were distributed by many airlines.
