Chislehurst Women’s Institute

MEMBERS send greetings and a warm welcome to India Volkers and the student members of the newly formed WI at Goldsmith’s College, London. The club is delighted with the good publicity this has provoked, proving that all ages are catered for in the WI.

At our March meeting Mr Ely gave an interesting talk with slides on the magistrates court.

The first woman magistrate was appointed in 1919. Nowadays there are approximately equal numbers of men and women. Members of the public can volunteer and have to be of good character and represent the number, gender and ethnicity of the community. The work is unpaid and legal advice and guidelines are given. Three magistrates sit on the bench and they deal with theft, criminal damage, road traffic accidents and the youth court.

The club meets on the third Monday of every month at 7.30pm in St Patrick’s Hall on Albany Road. On April 20 Mr McCooey will speak on Kent characters. Visitors are always welcome.
