2010 saw the 15th National Television Awards relocate to the renowned O2 Arena with new host Dermot O’Leary for the first time in 12 years, succeeding the celebrated Trevor McDonald. Opening the ceremony was X Factor Winner Joe McElderry with a flawless performance of ‘Don’t Stop Believin’’, despite having been savagely slaughtered by Rage Against the Machine for Christmas Number One. The show resolutely pressed on, seeing nationally esteemed actor David Tennant win both ‘Most Popular Drama’ for the fifth year in a row for his illustrious role in BBC’s Doctor Who, (outdoing The Bill, Shameless and Casualty) and ‘Outstanding Drama Performance’ for a remarkably tragic scene aired on New Year’s Day during his final episode as The Doctor. David Tennant’s prominent role is later to be filled by 27 year old Matt Smith. Dynamic duo Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly also left the Awards Ceremony on a high, having been awarded ‘Most Popular Entertainment Programme’ for the glittering ‘Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway’ and ‘Most Popular Entertainment Presenter.’ for the eminent shows they’ve brought to our screens, beating the likes of Holly Willoughby, Michael McIntyre and Paul O’Grady.
Of course, the ceremony was also sabotaged by the atrocious John and Edward with Vanilla Ice, featuring their freshly collaborated single ‘Under Pressure/Ice Ice Baby’. The ‘Grimes’ Twins have recently been seen ambushing concerts dotted all over the city, namely Capital 95.8’s Jingle Bell Ball and T4’s Stars of 2009. Other awards to be noted were The X Factor winning ‘Most Popular Talent Show’, overcoming perpetual rivals Strictly Come Dancing, much to the delight of talent guru Simon Cowell, who was disgusted at his show’s loss last Awards Ceremony. ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ and ‘Dancing on Ice’ were the other nominees for this main award.
