After 32 years of service to the community Biggin Hill & Westerham Lions Club has made the difficult decision to call it a day. It closed at the end of May 2015.
Spokesman Malcolm Lowing said “Over recent years, despite our best efforts, we have been unable to recruit new members to replace those that have moved away from the area and it had been become increasingly difficult to carry out our traditional activities with our reduced numbers”.
Since the Club was founded in 1983 it has donated many thousands of pounds to various local charitable causes, for example Biggin Hill Community Care, and to individuals in the community. Amongst many other things it provided the information screens in Stock Hill Surgery, put on an annual Senior Citizens’ Christmas Party and took part in the Biggin Hill Festival where the Club’s stalls were a familiar sight. It has also made numerous donations to various national and international appeals, most recently to the Lions Nepal Earthquake Appeal.
Malcolm Lowing added “We would like to thank everyone, too numerous to mention, who has supported us over the years”.
Some of the members will be transferring to Bromley Lions Club who have agreed to continue some of the Club’s activities. They plan to continue with the popular quizzes at St Theresa’s Church Hall and the Senior Citizens Christmas Party. At its final meeting the Club agreed donations to Deptford Reach, Bromley Lions Club, Lions Nepal Earthquake Appeal, Lions Healthy Schools London Programme and Biggin Hill Community Care, ending more than three decades of charitable work.
