The Big Debate Education in its broadest sense was the topic for debate at Hayes School.

There are few opportunities for young people to get together with members of the older generation to discuss and plan ideas, and to express opinions, but this week members of The University of the Third Age (U3A) and students from Bromley schools collaborated to attempt to throw light on one of today’s big issues – who is responsible for educating us?

At The Big Debate on March 19, attended by Councillor Graham Arthur, an audience of parents, teachers, local residents and supporters listened to informed and passionate discussion about where the main responsibility lies for educating not only our young people but also our lifelong learners.

Cross-generational teams from Hayes, Darrick Wood, Bullers Wood and Newstead Wood schools showcased their debating skills in this ground-breaking event as they challenged the audience to consider whether the state, the family, society or the individual is ultimately responsible.

All those who attended were impressed by the knowledge and enthusiasm of the speakers, and by the obvious spirit of teamwork between the generations.

This was a brilliant example of lifelong learning as members of the U3A shared their experiences of studying for degrees at the age of 60+ and their commitment to learning – truly inspiring.

I hope we will be able to collaborate in the future to provide opportunities for our students and other members of our community to work together as we prepare students for life beyond compulsory education.
