A wheelie good bin proved to be the star attraction at a recent ‘Street Soccer' day organised for local children by Trust Thamesmead and Gallions Residents Group. The brightly decorated bin was kindly donated by the UK's leading bin manufacturer, Taylor, for a day of football challenges that encouraged children to get outside and make the most of their summer holidays.

Despite cloudy weather, over 400 children attended the event with their families. Typically aged between 6 and 11, the participants were given four football themed challenges that they could take part in to earn points throughout the day. Challenges included a ‘keepie-uppie' event and tyre target challenge, but the star of the show was the decorated 1100 litre Taylor bin that participants had to try to chip a ball into.

Sporting Club Thamesmead's Centre Manager, Simon Jones said: “The day was designed to promote the new football facilities that will be opening at the community sports club. But instead of just telling people about it we wanted to give them an enjoyable day that would encourage children to join in when the activities start this September. The day went very well and the bin challenge had a long queue from start to finish; the children just couldn't resist keeping on trying until they got a ball in the bin.

“From the moment we approached event sponsors, Taylor, they were incredibly eager to help. They donated one of their bins at short notice and even decorated it for the event. We will continue to run these days with the bin as the star attraction. Conveniently we can also use it to store the rest of the equipment, allowing us to take the event all over Thamesmead.”

David Williams, Managing Director of Taylor, adds: “Trust Thamesmead do a fantastic job of engaging children in pro-active activities, especially during the long summer holidays. I am pleased that we were able to contribute to the good work in some way. We are Europe's largest manufacturer of metal bins and our products can be seen everywhere from city centres to the Harry Potter movies, but it is always good to support home events and good causes and take the opportunity to remind everyone that we manufacture in the UK and produce a great quality product.”
