To mark the 2013 National Gardening Week (15th – 21st April), London Wildlife Trust is organising a week of activities in Thamesmead that will culminate in the launch of a new gardening club.

Local residents are invited to enjoy garden-themed fun across three community sites right on their door step.

National Gardening Week in Thamesmead brings with it the first session of the ‘Afternoon Garden Club’ at the RBC Blue Water Garden, in South Thamesmead taking place 3:30-4:30pm on Thursday 18 April.

Open to all residents, the club aims to create a beautiful community space and teach people about water-sustainable gardening and biodiversity.

Local residents will help with sowing wildflower seeds in the garden, and take part in various activities including window box planting, making seed bombs and bug hotels.

The RBC Blue Water Garden was donated by the Royal Bank of Canada, following its award-winning exhibition at the 2012 RHS Chelsea Flower Show. It is now part of the Atrium Community Centre and is expected to inspire more residents into gardening.

Jeannine Moros-Noujaim, from London Wildlife Trust, works on the Natural Estates2 project to get residents in Thamesmead involved in their local green spaces. She said: “This is an amazing opportunity for residents to be inspired, learn new gardening skills and enjoy this wonderful new community space. I’d urge everyone to come along and get their hands dirty.”
