An inspirational teenager who has raised over £100,000 to build a legacy of peace has been awarded as a family hero.

George Mizen, 15, from Lee was named Family Hero for London at the 4Children and Take a Break Family Heroes Awards.

George and his family established the Jimmy Mizen foundation in honour of George's older brother who was murdered in a unprovoked attack when he was 16.

Since then, George has worked tirelessly as a fundraiser for the foundation to build a legacy of peace in the area whilst caring for his older sister, Sam, 28, who has Down's Syndrome.

He said: "I was very proud to receive the London Family Hero Award.

"it is important to me to keep Jimmy's name alive and work for peace and that's what keeps me motivated."

A few months ago, George also had to deal with being mugged at knife point by a youth close to where his brother was murdered.

Although George was frightened, he showed extraordinary compassion towards his attacker and was adamant that he didn't want the boy to go to prison.

George's mother, Margaret, who nominated him for the award, said: "I nominated my son because I felt he deserved an award for the hard work and dedication he has put into Jimmy's Foundation - never thinking of himself, but always what he can achieve."

The 4Children and Take a Break Family Heroes Awards celebrate inspirational people throughout the country who are nominated by the families they have supported.

4Children Chief Executive Anne Longfield OBE, said: "We all need heroes at some point in our lives.

"George epitomises a family hero - someone who selflessly gives their time and energy to help children and families through tough times.

"Our awards are an opportunity to recognise and celebrate Family Heroes and to say thank you.

Judges from 4Children families charity and Take a Break Magazine chose 12 regional Family Heroes from a record number of nominations George was presented with the accolade at an awards ceremony at Plaisterers' Hall , hosted by Richard Arnold, Entertainment Editor for ITV's breakfast show Good Morning Britain.
