Taking inspiration from the magnificent sight of Paul Cummins' major art installation Blood Swept Lands and Sea of Red at the Tower of London, the children and staff of Holy Cross Catholic Primary School, Catford recreated their own wonderful version to commemorate the outbreak of the First World War.

The display was created through a collaboration of both staff and pupils. Every child in the School made a poppy to place onto the giant portrait which is on show in the School Hall and admired daily by pupils, parents, staff and governors.

Headteacher Mary Collins said “As a School we wanted to mark the centenary of the First World War, it is important for our children to know of the sacrifices that were made for us during the First World War. We are all very proud of the display and of the significance it holds. We plan to commemorate Remembrance Day in School on November 11th with a special assembly. We have invited the members of the Diamond Club, our Parish Senior Citizens Club to join us when we remember those that lost their lives and observe the two minutes silence together.”
