Last weekend, hundreds of local people took to the Thames Cycle Path to take part in a day of cycling, sightseeing and fundraising for Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice.

The Hospice’s annual Big Bike Ride on Sunday 5th October saw nearly 400 cyclists take part, including Steve and Reece Sims from Sidcup, who cycled 13 miles from Greenwich to Erith and back.

“We heard about the Big Bike Ride through Reece's school and wanted to take part,” said 42-year-old Steve. “The Hospice is such a worthy cause and we felt that it was an important community charity to support.”

The event, which is organised annually by Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice in Abbey Wood, saw hundreds of cyclists follow the Thames Cycle Path from Erith to Greenwich via the Firepower Museum in Woolwich.

Community Fundraiser Augusta Adu thanked Bexleyheath, Erith and Woolwich Rotary Clubs who supported the event by marshalling, and said: “Our wonderful team of Hospice volunteers helped to make the Big Bike Ride a brilliant day and we can’t thank them enough for their support.”

It is hoped that £18,000 will be raised through sponsorship for the event which will help to enable Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice to continue to provide its free specialist end of life care to local people with life-limiting illnesses, as well as providing free support for their families, friends and carers.
