Rusper is a model railway club with a difference. Rather than building meticulously detailed models of specific locations, Rusper’s members operate a whole OO gauge railway network consisting of 11 stations. The trains are controlled using timetables and a bell code system, similar to how the real railways would have operated back in the days of steam. The stations are housed in 6 garden sheds, connected by outside sections of track which are put away in between the meetings, which occur roughly once a month.
An encyclopaedic knowledge of railways is not required to enjoy Rusper as the enjoyment comes simply from running trains. The whole system is now over 20 years old and, much like the real railway, maintenance is always ongoing giving members an opportunity to use their DIY skills, or learn from other members. The club has its own supply of locomotives, coaches and wagons, but members are allowed to bring their own as long as they fit within the 1948-1964 period of operation.
Our website is full of information and photos about what happens during these sessions, but our newest members have told us that the best way to really get a flavour is to visit during an operating session so that you can see the trains running and have a go at controlling them yourself. We are currently looking for members, so if you think that you may be interested, please contact our secretary on ruspermembership@gmx.com or visit www.ruspermrc.co.uk.
