ANGRY residents are accusing a tennis club of putting profits before people by erecting a phone mast near their homes.

They believe their health will be put at risk if Sundridge Park Lawn Tennis and Squash Club, in Lawn Close, Bromley, allows Hutchinson 3G to install a 15m mast on its land.

The club’s neighbours are particularly concerned about a new study by Dutch researchers, which claims phone masts for the high-tech third generation mobile phones cause headaches and nausea.

The masts have also been linked to cancer and blood clots in the brain.

Mum-of-two Jennifer Bunting, 40, of Lawn Close, is one of those protesting against the mast.

She said: “Everyone is worried about the health risks. A year ago the club said it needed evidence these masts cause harm and now we have given it to the club.

“Many of the neighbours have lived in their homes for more than 30 years and have been members of the club.

“The club’s failure to listen seems to be very shortsighted.” Although Hutchinson 3G has dismissed the Dutch report’s findings, the neighbours remain adamant the club is only thinking of its profits.

Mrs Bunting said: “We believe the club is putting profits before people as it will get £10,000 to £15,000 for allowing the mast to be built on its land.

“This is affecting its staff’s judgement.” Tennis club chairman Jeff Stevenson insists the residents’ concerns are being taken into consideration.

He said: “There is absolutely no evidence at all masts cause health problems.

“I have received the Dutch report the residents have sent and I am speaking with Hutchinson 3G to seek its advice.

“Nothing has been signed yet and there is no possibility of the mast being erected next week.

“I don’t know where the £10,000 rumour has come from.

“Obviously we will receive rent because the land is being used but it is nothing like that amount.” l What do you think about phone masts? Write to News Shopper, Mega House, Crest View Drive, Petts Wood, BR5 1BT or email: newsroom@london.newsquest.co.uk
