Youngsters relive life of Darwin

3:29pm Thursday 3rd July 2008

STUDENTS have been learning about the life and work of Charles Darwin.

Sixth formers from Newstead Wood School for Girls, Orpington, and Charles Darwin School, Biggin Hill, led an annual Darwin Day event for Year 3 and 4 pupils at Cudham Church of England Primary School, Biggin Hill and Downe Primary School, Downe.

The pupils dressed up in Victorian costume and were able to see hand-written notebooks by Charles Darwin at Downe House, Luxted Rd, Downe.

Bromley Council world heritage bid manager, Alister Hayes, said: "From the Galapagos Islands to Downe, Darwin's theories on evolution are well known.

"However, few of us understand the detailed scientific work undertaken by Darwin, gained during years spent at Downe House itself.

"We hope this graphic illustration of his life helped pupils understand just how significant Darwin's legacy is for us today."
