A GRANDMOTHER has demonstrated against nuclear waste being transported through the area on trains.

Bromley and Beckenham Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) member Ann Garrett, of Plaistow Grove, Sundridge Park, demonstrated with Tahrir Swift, 48, of Ridgeway Crescent Gardens, Orpington, and David Polden, 67, from north London.

Ms Garrett, 67, wore a radiation suit during the protest at Elmstead Woods and Grove Park stations.

The protesters put up banners and handed out leaflets to passengers waiting at the stations.

They then travelled on some trains to check how close they travel to houses.

Ms Garrett said: "The problem is the trains carrying radioactive waste travel too close to people's homes."

Trains carry nuclear waste from Dungeness nuclear power station in Kent to Sellafield in Cumbria for reprocessing.

A spokesman for Direct Rail Services, which operates the trains, said: "The safety record of moving used nuclear fuel by rail is exemplary - it has been transported in this way since 1962, travelling over eight million miles without any incident involving the release of radioactive material."
