Chislehurst Road bridge set to reopen in mid-November Chislehurst Road bridge set to reopen in mid-November

CHISLEHURST Road bridge is expected to be reopened on November 16, it has been announced.

Work to replace the damaged 1958 bridge with a new one looks set to be on target after almost a year of construction.

This week workers at the site are breaking out the old road north of the bridge, laying new foundations and drainage before putting kerbs in.

Speaking to News Shopper the site manager said they are working towards the November 16 date but Bromley Council said it could not give an exact date for the reopening.

The old bridge, across the four line railway between Chislehurst and St Mary Cray stations, was closed on November 7 last year.

A Bromley Council spokesman said: "We have always said that the bridge would be closed for a year and as the closure took place last November, our target date is approaching.

"Although, it is tight, the work is on schedule and budget - readers, residents and motorists should watch this space for a precise date for a few more weeks.”

Actually not looking forward to the re-opening

Got used to it being quiet around the area - I expect it will be solid every morning & evening again

I bet the locals wish it would never open again.
I went over it last Sunday to take the dog for a walk and it was as quiet as a graveyard, the only thing you could hear were the birds in the woods.

Blimey - when it was just about to be closed all the locals were complaining about the extra 10 mins they would need to do the round trip. Now look at them!

Unfortunately you are right. But the reality is that this is an A road and while the bridge has been closed the traffic has moved in many cases to residential streets that people are using as rat runs. Hundreds of other people who throught that they had bought a property on a quiet road will have been very unhappy over the last year. Now the traffic will be back where it belongs, ie. the A road.

The young Ronster used to stand on the old bridge and watch the Golden Arrow go by. Pullman coaches, the passengers off to gay Paree. Young Ron with the Rse out of his shorts, and his Woolworths plimpsoles off to get the 61 home. Happy days though.
