Victorian Crystal Palace station refurbished

CRYSTAL Palace Overground station’s historic ticket office, built in 1854, has been refurbished.

It has been restored to reflect the original Victorian grandeur and has tripled in size.

The original Grade II listed ticket hall was built in 1854 for passengers flocking to see the Great Exhibition which had been relocated from Hyde Park earlier that year.

Transport for London’s chief operating officer for rail Howard Smith cut the ribbon on September 24 to mark the half way stage of the station’s £7.5 million upgrade.

Refurbishments to the rest of the station are continuing and should be finished next year with step-free access provided by three new lifts.

The 11,000 passengers who use the station every day will also benefit from improved CCTV, customer information screens, a PA system and new signage.

Mr Smith said: “This is another major step in London Overground’s upgrade of its network around London.

“We have a glorious Victorian railway heritage and it’s tremendous to be able to bring back into use a building that is both beautiful and perfectly suited for its renewed role.”
